Oh, Men!!

He could be a descent sort, but I don't want any of you girls dating the guy on the left exclusively, ok? And if you're looking for sandwiches, they are now across the street on Hardy. Come to think of it, Jared was in New Zealand a little white back...

Daffodil Day

Yesterday was Daffodil Day, the biggest annual Cancer Society (of New Zealand ?) fundraiser. (Relay is a bigger event but we have that every other year.) On every block there were volunteers collecting money, selling fresh daffodils, tiny teddy bears.

Pretty big, eh!

Wood Pigeon

This bird is big and it was having lunch (Plum flowers) when I was passing through the Maitai river walkway.
Excuse me for CA's around Brunch.

Signs

I particularly liked the "BARBER" sign. This cheese shop has really good stuff.

Theatre Royale Renovations Updated

Well, I had hoped to show you an update on Theatre Royale's renovations, (the front still looks the same), but I have to strategize for that. See the Google Map pic below. (If you search "Theatre Royale, Nelson, New Zealand" on Google Map, by the way, it shows a location several blocks south on Rutherford St.)

The dark gray roof is the Theatre, then below it is an Army Office, (their web site says it's an "office"; no tanks, just trucks, with folk who walk admirably erect.) To its left is a car dealership that appears in my pic, and to its left is the Indian restaurant, which have long been fixed. I was across the street at the larger car dealership with the triangular tent.

So, either, I can go when builders are working (or having a tea break) and ask if I can take a shot of the renovations, OR, I might approach whatever business located in the huge silver building behind the theatre, eh. That's the plan.

Man Cave

I was wondering what the means of this on Toyota dealer's show window. It turns out some sort of prise draw promotion. Lot's of good stuff! Go there and check out how you enter or maybe listen to the Rock FM(?). You cannot see from this angle but there is a beautiful electric gutter, huge BBQ, quad bike, GPS navigation and much more.
My PL filter wasn't handy at the time, so the reflections. It is the old fire station.

Tutu Purse

I'd love to get my 2-year-old niece this tutu purse, but I don't think she's tall enough to carry it around. Besides, her parents will say it's much too pink.

The building across the street, School of Fisheries, is only reflected on the shop window, but it's reminiscent of the double exposure pics I was into at one stage back in the film/manual advance days.

Sunset

Yet, another sunset from Nelson.
I was tempted by the light reflected on the edge of shallow water.

Nelson Hospital Building at Evening

I took this from Princess Drive lookout area with 300mm. I was there yesterday morning to hook up a hart rate monitor. I have to carry this 24 hours and take it back this morning around 9:15AM. There is a nothing wrong with me but just to record baseline. So, my doctor has something to compare if/when something was wrong. It's just for precaution due to my family history. To me, it's an interesting experience.

Danger! Danger!

Most of the books were only 25% off, but they had old art books. Yummy. But I came out unscathed.

Pay Your Fines Here

I had lunch with Ben in town Friday and he was laughing as we came out of the pub because he found the sign funny. Since we had no fines to pay, I thought, ok, he can laugh, but it's potentially serious stuff, you know.

Reusable Shopping Bag Logo

Last Wednesday I went on a supermarket tour; the idea was to learn to read labels, to know what's not on labels, and a highlight on the difference between Australian labels and ours, as a lot of our food come from Australia, among other countries. At the end of the tour, we got a goodie bag.

I've seen these before, but hadn't had one because yonks ago I bought some nice cotton ones shaped like a plastic shopping bag. From a distance the logo looked like a green-lipped mussel, which is a specialty of the region. I realized Thursday morning that it was a smiley plastic bag!

We're trying to get rid of plastic bags, yeah? So, why use a happy plastic bag as a "mascot"? It's like anti-whalers using a cute harpoon, or gun-control lobby using a smiley pistol as their symbols, I thought... Any other examples?

No matter, I'm not against recyclable bags...

Sailing

Walking further down Harley Street, I found a model of a lovely sailboat in someone's office. I felt like a spy shooting a government office (I think) from the outside, albeit from the sidewalk; it was after hours but still in daylight. If this is your office and would like this taken off, please email me.

Also, join us in celebrating (a few days late) Lachezar's Auckland Daily Photo's Second birthday.

Winter Tree

This tree, in the middle of the NMIT (Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, ex-Nelson Polytechnic) courtyard, is a protected tree; it lost a few big branches in the recent storm. I'm somewhat surprised we never posted a proper pic of this tree before, but here's a partial view.

This one is from my archive - it's about same time in 2007.
We have a fine weather back!

Rain, Rain and More Rain

That's outside; I'm in my basement all day. Just surfaced because I remembered Ben didn't have a pic for the day.

Apples!

I think lot's of apples were fallen off from trees during last storm. I hope they were rescued and become a good juice for everyone.

This is how I found this photo opportunity.

The Suter Art Gallery

This is a side wall of The Suter Art Gallery main entrance. The large sculpture here is a generous donation of our friend Cliff and Ann Nighy. The artist is Jim MacKay who is also famous for glass arts.

The Rig is Finally Gone

As we rushed to town on Thursday at a little after 10AM, we saw the oil rig being transported at long last. There were so many people looking and photographing at various points on Rocks Road I'm sure there are gazillion photos (ok, a dozen?) of it on the Internet by now. We posted this twice before, here and here.

Tree Stumps

There used to be trees shading this side of Collingwood Street before the storm. It's sad to see that the Council had to do this.

The building to the right left is our dentist, Paul Burgess's office. Meg used to love looking at this particular tree while waiting, and sketching the pattern on the trunk.

Oh, well.

This morning, I see workers are removing one in the big picture above.
Those are close up of some. As you can see, one is a pretty bad condition.

All Cleaned Up

Well done! Have you noticed the external light fitting? It's still broken.

Mel's "More Than a Handful"

In July, my gym had a "create your own bra" contest. This wasn't the winner, but it is carefully-crafted and I was most impressed. (Trust me, it's hard to keep those hands in position with people jumping up and down around it all day!) In fact, a lot of women put in much time and effort into these tiny contests at my gym; hats off to all of you, ladies.

I've also been looking for politically incorrect men jokes I mentioned here, but either I'm so used to them I don't notice, or there have been fewer, so I shall try harder to find them. It could be I need to go to the gym more frequently.

Blessing of Fishing Fleet

Blessing of Fishing Fleet is an annual event that takes place near the Yacht Club. This year it was postponed due to bad weather, and took place on Saturday. The buses posted yesterday were there apparently transported the elderly to event.

We caught the tail end of the event from the wrong side of the Power House building when we saw two choppers flying above us as we tried to sit down to a leisurely weekend breakfast at 2PM. Read more about it here.

Newman's Buses

We saw two old Newman's Buses parked near the Saltwater Saturday morning. Being a sucker for old vehicles, I rushed to photograph the two, and I liked this one in particular. The angled windows make them look like they go really fast.

This one, I can't remember if the driver was smiling at me or was about to mow me down, but he left shortly after I shot this.

It's nice to see remnants of this great company. Remember this?

Today's post is for the Keeper family.

Sign of New Zealand

The names and numbers may change, not all establishments may have a spiffy bike made of car/bike parts, but this is arguably the most frequently studied sign of New Zealand.

This is the Fish & Chip shop posted here, but under different management.

Learning to Cross the Street

A classroom full of littlies, three teachers and a policeman were learning how to cross the street yesterday. The male teacher in the middle stopped each child, knelt down, spoke kindly pointing in the direction cars were coming from, (the left, in NZ, and there was a bit of traffic during this lunch time,) before s/he completed the crossing. The big kids didn't dare cross while the grownups were watching.

NDP turns two today. Thanks for your visits and comments over the years.

NEWSFLASH: You all know Lachezar has been posting mind-blowing photos from Auckland. We belatedly discovered another Auckland photo blog, so please have a look at Baruch's A Walk Through Auckland.

NEWFLASH: I am officially a real bully. Though Alan may disagree. He put a plug in the paper for NDP once again. (The last six paragraphs.) But I'm glad, because this is the part of the story I wanted told. Once, Ben heard from someone in Canada who discovered the back of her head in one of his shots.

August 2008 Theme Day: Metal - Recycle

I have been collecting tins for few months just for taking photo like this. Well, truth is... I was too lazy to take a small amount to our collection point. On the other hand, it gave me an opportunity for taking this photo. The "Recycle" is a important concept!
