This vars is a special one-off version made by local artist Royce McGlashen.
I believe it was for his exhibition.
We love this piece very much there was few more fantastic piece in his work-shop / gallery at time we visit him.

We should have been there more but there is chance that we spend unexpected expense every time we are there...

The Flag Debate

One of New Zealand's current prime minister's legacy projects is to change the flag of this country; to get rid of the Union Jack and make it more pertinent to New Zealand as it is now; and distinguish it from the all-too similar Australian flag. The first stage is to choose the alternate, (to the current one,) in the next few weeks; then in March, we vote either to keep the current one, or to change to the alternate.

Designs were submitted by the public, then choices narrowed down to a long list, then the final four chosen by "distinguished New Zealanders" with the fifth, (second from right,) added by popular demand. The far right and the far left above were designed by the same person. You may also have seen the Laser Kiwi which got a lot of social media coverage. The possible disproportionate presence of the silver fern may be due to its association with New Zealand sports teams and/or the PM's preference.

The process is estimated to cost $26 Million, because New Zealand is secure with a "Rock Star" economy. His words.

August Chill

With very little firewood left, we're having another wee cold spell. This was taken not so early this morning, and the snow on the hills were much brighter than this. Most of the hills are under snow clouds now in the late afternoon. Brr.

Breakfast

These guys are such teasers they are usually deeply in the tree for breakfast but today this guy posed just long enough for me to fetch the camera. Not long enough to change the white balance nor to get out of the macro setting, though. There are two of them, but they like to eat separately. Occasionally they sit in my naked cherry tree in the afternoon and compare notes.

Cold Spell

It's been cold all over New Zealand this week; Nelson has had two consecutive overnight temperatures below 0C, which is cold for Nelson. But every year, by June, I don't feel the cold any more and much time is spent on perpetual weeding.

This year I learned about multi-level potting of different bulbs, the idea being the smaller ones on top flower early and medium and larger ones will follow. The top layers have come out, but now I don't know what's going to happen to the violets, (the purple ones may die after this morning's frost), or the subsequent layers on top. I only followed the instructions from a bulb company!
