We are sad about Nicola's Cantina, Church Street, not being open for lunches this side of the lockdowns. It used to be a favorite not just between Meg and me, but among our circle of friends. Although the situation is not as sad as some eateries, which have sadly closed. I'm sure you all have such places in your town.

What a Deal!!
One of the bars near Four Spirits Corner, Bridge Street. (On Four Spirits Corner, on Bridge and Collingwood Streets, I was told there used to be three bars and a church, but the Internet tells me something else.)

Traffic Cone Tree
The building behind is Jens Hansen, who made the rings for LOTR films. There were seven in all, from memory, in different sizes; the lettering on the rings were CG though. Selwyn Place West.

There was Never Fancy Map/Signs When I Worked Here
When I worked there, 1997-2000, it was called Nelson Polytechnic, which became Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Since March it's been Te Pukenga, which is the name for a whole group of former polytechnics around the country; no doubt they will change it again to include some kind of regional marker. I hope. The main building is on Hardy Street.

Aliens in Nelson
It's the shadow cast by the Kinetic Sculpture, but it's kinetic, and there was wind, so the Aliens kept dancing, ignoring me. Rutherford Park.

Why did Ben and Meg Cross State Highway 6?
These palm trees stand at the entrance of town. You turn left on State Highway 6 if you're coming from east, say Picton or Blenheim, and go behind these trees.
We came out of the carpark on Kinzett Terrace, though that hole in the trees, and crossed a State Highway on foot, where we're supposed to cross, for the first time in our 29.5 years in New Zealand, instead of walking a short way to a tunnel. Luckily, around 2.30 on a Sunday, there were few cars.

Dance to the Music of Time
This is the face more or less on the town side.
This is the face facing the sea I saw for the first time on Sunday. By the carpark on Kinzett Terrace, the sea side of the roundabout to come into town on State Highway 6.

Cork Tree - Details
I am inside the tree, looking at a very long branch growing towards me. The small leaves belong to a vine growing on the branch.
Bark closeup.
Standing inside the tree, looking up.
Sigh. Nelson courthouse, Bridge Street.

Another Tall Tree - Nelson Courthouse/Central Police Station
They must be asked often. When I approached the Courthouse security guard, he immediately told me it's a cork tree. It stands in front of the Courthouse, but the building in view is the Central Police Station. I can't even begin to tell you how big or majestic this tree is. Bridge Street.

Kandy Korner under Liquid Amber
Strictly speaking, the dairy is not not "under" the tree/s, but liquid amber are fabulous in town right now, particularly around the corner of Collingwood and Nile Streets.

Mind the Gap
After the Christchurch Earthquake (2011) and Kaikoura Earthquake (2016) some buildings in Nelson CBD were condemned and taken down. More recently, some which passed muster in the earlier rounds have been deemed unsafe, and they have been coming down. Here, there used to be a clothing factory, (I'm sorry I can't remember the names of the building nor the business;) I remember buying a sewing machine part that I needed for a weaving bobbin winder. Collingwood Street end of Bridge Street.

The Whole Picture
This is the rubbish bin I showed you on January 18. I finally remembered to get a shot, though it's not very exciting. Since I took the pic back in January, though, I've been seeing this all over the CBD, (central business district.) The clouds make up for it, don't you think? Buxton Carpark.

Not Exactly Sunflowering
We found a half-used packet of sunflower seeds from a few years ago, so we put some in the edge of the tomato patch. It gets a lot of sun in our shady garden, but also high winds all the time. This one, the taller, faced the sun for the first few days of flowering, then gave up after 60km winds. The smaller never bothered with the sun, but has multiple buds from one stem.
