This is a paddock outside the town of Collingwood in Golden Bay, shot in May. Back in 1859, someone in England thought this would make a good nation's capital. But if you look at the map, you can see it's surrounded by hills and it would have been a hard slog transporting building material by road; back then, the primary mode of transport would have been boats, I hope. Nowadays, it's a quiet little town with one gas station, one pub, a few motels, a camp ground, and very nice beach houses.
(If you click on the blurb above, you can read about it in more detail.)
A former capital-to-be then. Interesting! I bet they’re happy with the current state of affairs.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm quite sure of that. It's only 90 minutes away, and yet after you go over the Takaka Hills, it's quite heavenly, and totally a different place from Nelson.
ReplyDeleteI had longed to retire there at some point, until the price of petrol shot up two years ago. There have been quite a few nice property on the market, too, because of that...
One can only dream.
I'm so glad I came back to your blog to see such beautiful pictures. A capital to be is actually an amazing programme!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that team NZ had no success in Valen[z]ia! Maybe the All Blacks will show their quality on the Tri Nations 2007. No need to keep it to show against the amateur Portuguese in France in the World Championship...
GMG, the loss to Australia last weekend was overshadowed by the torn spinnaker last weekend, but I think we were quite devastated by it; I don't think we expected to loose, though the Aussies are a good team.
ReplyDeleteThis looks very peaceful. Had it become the capitol I sure it would be anything but peaceful.
ReplyDeleteReally nice shot and interesting info. Looks like a great place to retire.
ReplyDeleteAnother case of failed long distance town planning. (That's how the steepest street in the world - in Dunedin - came to be. Someone in London did the layout of the town, neglecting to inform herself about the topography. The road's like a ski jump!)
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting. All of Golden Bay would be nice to live in retirement, Sue, exactly what we thought, until older friends said it's too far from any hospital. Hummmm.... 10 years ago we thought, "Rubbish", but now we understand the implications.
