Ultra V Day

A particularly thin patch of ozone layer traveled over New Zealand yesterday. In the short drive to reshoot the Early Settlers, Ben turned into Rudolf the Red Nosed Camera Guy. On days like these, it's best to dress like a bank robber when going outside, so we had long sleeves, hats and very dark sunglasses on top of a thick layer of sun screen. To the sunnies-clad eye, the sea was an unseasonable turquoise (the color usually reserved for later in the summer on very hot days), but we were surprised to see the photos don't show this. I know there is a scientific explanation somewhere.

    PS to yesterday, Meg: I bet your Nelson has very little in common (except all the Victorias) with Nelson in Lancashire!

    The ozone layer is disturbing, as are all the other mainfestations of our murdering this planet. Seriously, it is changing so fast now, too fast in fact. You are very sensible to be so careful. Nobody here takes the blindest bit of notice. That's because it's much easier to be blind and believe that the next holiday, the next TV soap opera, the next car the next football game is more important. Take care down there!

    Mile, I have to have a look at Nelson, Lancashire, to compare! And re. the environment, it's happening all very quickly, isn't it? I would like to build a more emergy-sane house closer to the centre of town; our house is 44 years old and quite inefficient, and short of taking out all walls to insulate the exterior walls, there's not much else we can do. We are hoping to install a solar panel in the next year or so. But Ben has TWO CARS!!! Can you believe it?

    Cristina, apparently it does, and yesterday's awas not the thinnest layer, apparently. It's the first time I paid attention to the news item, but I have heard it a few times before. The sun was very strong, and I wanted my sunglasses inside the house, seriously!

    Thanks, guys. It was a nice day, but also weird: I kept visualising burns and moles on every surface under the sun until the sun went down. Yikes.

    Piika, you can, but this beach is rocky, so I recommend Tahuna Beach. But even there the water is cold compared to the beaches I've been to. When we first came to Nelson we stayed in a Bed and Breakfast with a couple from Hawaii, and he was travelling with scuba gear, surf board and possibly a wind surfing paraphernalia, and he used none of these because the water was too cold. He said this: "Meg, we are too near the South Pole right here." But seriously, the currents are totally different, and even in the middle of the winter, the sea in NZ is not as warm as other places I've been to.
