A Nelson Photographer in Wellington

Ben's protesting Te Papa is not Nelson, but I can't help it, I'm so proud of My Man. I promise this will be the last of this series.

Nelson in Wellington Part 2

In another part, there are touch screen monitors where we can search for photographs by subjects, regions, or photographers, and then enlarge a particular photo. You may recognize many of Ben's as past NDP posts.

One wall in this room is a big screen and we can transfer the photos on our monitor to the big screen. Here's when we loaded a bunch of Ben's pics; you can move the red square around at bottom right to get a feel of the wall. Visitors can also take photos or video of themselves on the monitors and load them on to the big screen. Images on the big screen can be manipulated with a flash-light like pointer.

I'm sure by now you're hurting laughing so hard with my technical jargon!!

Nelson in Wellington Part 1

Te Papa, our national museum in Wellington, opened a 10-year interactive exhibition called Our Space last September. For months prior to the opening, they collected photographs from all over New Zealand, it appears mainly by targeting Flickr sites, and Ben's was among them.

We went to see it last week, and I was so very proud of My Man, but Ben remained typically cool. Most of his photos are of Nelson, but he had some of Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin as well. The collection process is on-going, and I'm now thinking of sending in a few to see if anything bites.

On the floor is an aerial map of New Zealand. When we step on a particular area/square, a photograph or video from the region shows up on a screen and a white light connects the square on the floor and the screen for the region. To change the photo, we must step off the square and step back on again; our friend Trish repeated this about 50 times for us. Thanks, Trish.

(Oh, sorry, that's my foot.)

High Noon

Too late for shadow theme day. This is the shot from the far side of this image.

Knowledge Catcher

Late last Friday afternoon, I noticed, after using the NMIT library for a decade, that high above us inverted waste paper baskets hung as lampshades. Was that a turn-of-the-century style statement, or is is a metaphor I don't get?

Danger Keep Out

I was shocked to see a large area around the court house (left) cordoned off Thursday morning, but this being a white tape, not a yellow one, I think it's for maintenance of some sort. The man certainly looked relaxed. The building at the back to the right is our police HQ.

Chocolate Sold by Weight

"Not the purchaser's, we hope," laughed Nancy and Meg, feeling slightly uneasy... At Zatori, on Trafalgar Street.

Pay 'n' Display

Used to be maximum 4 hours. Still, it's not that bad for $ wise. How much the parking cost per hour in your place?

Waiata

On Friday I also walked across the bridge on Bridge Street that took awfully long to reconstruct. On the railing was etched a waiata (song) about the Maitai River in English, brail and Maori. Lovely, but sorry, I didn't write down the song. Slack DP-ing, I know.

Here's Ben chronicling the progress of the bridge here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here, and another decorative element here.

Cloud

Walking from town to Founders Park yesterday afternoon I kept looking at the cloud over the sea but I could only catch glimpses from between the houses. Then suddenly I came to Neale Park, and it was one magical moment, like when you do see a rainbow from one end to the other.

Fire

It's getting colder. We had our new fire going. I opened the front glass door for photograph. (Experiment with B&W conversion)

Apple, Almond and Frangipani Tart

We're not Nelson Daily Food Photo. Yet. But this was the most beautiful baking I've seen outside cookbooks. But I only ate a salad. At Delicious on Church Street.

All Grown Up

That's Ben's first Pajero; we bought it in Auckland just before we moved to Nelson. (I didn't want to part with our tiny red Honda Civic with black leather seats that evening I nearly cried - over a car!!!) This baby used to slow down dramatically when we went over the hill to go to Blenheim, we imagined cyclists overtaking us. After two years and a bit Ben got a darker blue one with a bigger engine, but now we have a white petrol one.

We believe a staff at the dealership bought this and it's been souped up considerably in the last ten years. At least it's been accessorized and loved to bits. Every time I see it parked in front of the the dealership, I can't help but slow down and take a few pics and say hello. One day, they just might catch me caressing it!

Breakfast at Morrison St is Habit Forming

Last Saturday I had to mail a scarf to an exhibition so we went to the PO which was closed for ANZAC Day. So we stumbled across the street to Morrison St and had breakfast, again! Later we discovered there was a 20% surcharge because staff need to be paid holiday pay. Never mind, thee young staff probably live in cold flats, and in proportion to the pleasure we got, it was worth it!!

Both of us desperately wanted pancakes with cream, honey and lemon curd, but knowing that's not exactly "healthy", we also ordered Baghdad Eggs, too. Their lemon curd is tangy and sweet and heavenly. (Sorry, I remembered to take a shot AFTER I smeared the cream.)

Aha, tomorrow looks like another Saturday! I wonder if we have space for another inexpensive luxury.
