Short-Lived
Poppies, an achingly feminine, independently-owned bookshop, decided to close its doors after about a year. Sadly, it seems Nelson cannot support two independently-owned bookshops. Everything is 35% off, including some of the beautiful art and picture books. Wendy plans to stay open for a few more weeks.

This is just so sad and a true loss to Nelson.
ReplyDeleteLove this shop - and it's intelligent stock selection.
I blame the large chains for making it so tough for boutique bookeries like Poppies ...

Isn't it, though. I loved the atmosphere there, and the interior, and the selection. Like the way Blackmores used to be way back, except more feminine.
ReplyDeleteIt’s always a shame to see a shop go out of business. It’s a hard task to make one successful these days.
ReplyDeleteBugger....
ReplyDeleteI loved your 'achingly feminine' description Meg. I possibly wouldn't have identified it as overly feminine but it has a great energy and atmosphere ...

Yeah? I thought it was over-the-top girly and didn't dare meet Ben there... It was a place to go by myself for me.
ReplyDeleteWe still have 2 Poppies here in Hamilton & Campbridge. I have posted a photo or two of Poppies before on my blog. In fact, it's my favourite bookshop! Yes, the decor is a bit girly, but the books are fantastic! I know lots of men who enjoy the shop for its books, and I doubt whether they even notice the decor. It's a shame that it's closing.
