Yesterday, we had very strong gusts and a number of tree fell, including this one, which apparently fell right behind a moving car. The story of this tree made national news. It was something of a landmark at the corner of Collingwood and Hardy Street.
There were several power surges in the afternoon. The pipeline below the Tantragee water treatment plant was lost and we need to conserve water by 70%. Meg reckons we'd better boil our water before we drink it, too.
Nothing dramatic happened at our house, though at around 4PM Meg rang me at work because she'd never felt the whole house shake because of wind. Elsewhere on the North Island and in Marlborough, there have been more serious flooding and landslides.
This morning, it's eerily still. Reminded us of typhoons back home, but at least in Nelson, it was a short storm.
EDIT: Sorry for the confusion. I found a clip on TV Three News site that didn't work for me. Now I found it on YouTube, so here it is. Notice when the car stops!

Wood Burner
Because of this regulation change in our residence area, we have to replace our wood burner to a more ECO friendly one - by the next season - more likely by end of the year.
This shot was taken couple of weeks ago when I was playing with 300mm lens with very high ISO setting (ISO3200) on my D200. Not too bad.

Ministry of Education, Marlborough, Nelson, West Coast
Headquarters, or similar, I assume. It's new, and it is next to The Nelson Contact Bridge Club Inc.
It used to be the gang headquarters, and no, I don't have a picture of it back then; The Bridge Club has always been there. Must have been an interesting neighborhood; it's almost part of the Central Business District nowadays.

Rain/Tide
Yesterday around 3pm. The pic is Ben's.
Ben says it's just high tide, but we'd been having sporadic, heavy showers, and I thought it was flooding. I had Ben put on his new 300mm lens to have a look. I'm talking about the walkway near the runway of our airport. This is a different part of the walkway, but you see what I mean.
Today is the last day of the winter school holidays. Air Nelson (a subsidiary of Air New Zealand) pilots have been on strike these last few days so there were markedly fewer flights flown by non-union pilots. Our pilots want more than one every seven weekends off; I can sympathize with that!
PS. This photo was taken with my 70-210mm about 125mm of focal length. The 300mm was a little too long to cover the area she wanted to show. - Ben

Face Lift
I've been holed up in my basement working, and went into town for the first time yesterday in a couple of weeks, to find State Cinema having a face lift! I would have thought that powdery peach suited the style of the building, but can't wait to see what color it's going to be. I also noticed the worlds "State Chambers" for the first time; now I'm not sure what the building was originally.

Hi!
And I guess we were in the local paper earlier in the week. Here, the 10th paragraph. Meg gave Alan lots more info about the DP world, but alas, editing, you know. I hope a few Nelsonians discover the rest of your DPs.
If you found our blog via Alan Clarke's piece in The Nelson Mail, please visit the Daily Photo portal to explore the rest of the DP world.

Soonish, this oil rig may depart from Nelson. I found the story here at Nelson Mail web site.

Ben's Cold
It's Ben's cold; it's been going around his work place forever, so why is it my Day Eight with a horrible feeling, a headache, body ache, stuffed nose, and general yuckiness? I've been drinking gallons and gallons of honey/ginger hot drink. I think I might give gardening a go today; either it'll fix me, or I'll really be sick tomorrow.
That's our favorite Royce McGlashen mug and behind is a tile painted by a Golden Bay artist, but I can't remember her name.

Short-Lived
Poppies, an achingly feminine, independently-owned bookshop, decided to close its doors after about a year. Sadly, it seems Nelson cannot support two independently-owned bookshops. Everything is 35% off, including some of the beautiful art and picture books. Wendy plans to stay open for a few more weeks.

Purple + Yellow-Green
There's got to be a way to do this.
I've been interested in weaving in two or more colors, but when the pieces are finished, they look a third color. This one, as you can see, is in purple cashmere/silk warp (i.e. a little bit of sheen) and blue-y-yellow-green cashmere (matt) weft. When I hold it up and wave it or shake it like this, the whole piece looks a bit more... silver-y. Can you tell me what I do to capture that color? I'm doing a whole lot of these with shiny cottons, too. Intriguing stuff; I'm sure there's a name to this... occurrence/symptom(?), too. Any help appreciated.

Stick Farm
Tasman Bay Roses, Motueka. Whereas other nurseries try to diversify and sell garden furnitures, ornaments, books or croqs, or start a café, the good people of TBR doggestly stuck to roses, mainly as a wholesaler. (Except some summers when they do carry a few bits of other plants that go well with roses.)
In the summer you can spend hours walking though their stunning gardens and look at and smell the roses before selection, but as Mr TBR Senior told us years ago, if you want to plant them, come in the winter when they have all the varieties, and the transition is easier on the plants. In fact, above is the current shop front, and there are rows and rows of fields behind where, if you want something that's not in the shop front, they whop on the quad bike and go dig up whatever you ask.
Heaven on earth. Yesterday's loot: freshly dug-up bush Cecil Brunner, Margaret Merrill, and Dublin Bay. Plus a free, white suited-for-cut-flower bush. During the winter, if you buy three, you get a present. Yay!

Frosting on the Top
I know some of you have magnificent gardens. We don't, and I don't want to post pics of our mess, but Ben told me yesterday morning he had absolutely no pics to post and I mentioned the picnic table was frosted over, so he ordered me, yes, ordered me, to shoot and post. How bossy!
Frost for us only mean another gorgeous, sunny chilly day.

July 2008 Theme Day: "No . . ." signs(!?)
Remember this? Yes, this is where the post office was. There is no post office there, any more... They moved to the more central location.
This isn't strictly a "NO sign", but... If you'd like to see a "NO sign" in Nelson CBD, here is one we posted last year.
