The Shed is Gone

Honda assembly plant was one of the major employers in Nelson until it shut down a decade ago. For the last few months/years, the building had been for sale. It must have sold because Monday night, when we went to get the biggest blue tarpaulin, we saw the shed being taken down.

End of an era for Nelson; Honda is having a reunion of former staff on the weekend.

As for our huge blue tarpaulin, it cost four times as much as I had expected, but there's something so attractive about a big piece of cloth covering things...

Day One, Tuesday

Nice builders Shane (bathroom and kitchen specialist) and Ryan worked in the scorching sun on our dark green roof for the better part of the day destroying our solid concrete, (not blocks) chimney. (Well, it rained the minute they opened up the roof, but that lasted for two and a half minutes.) Then they opened up the kitchen wall to find out the fire place is solid concrete, not blocks, and they warned me Day Two will be very noisy day. Inside there's at least three times as much concrete as the chimney.

I love these guys; they are nice, polite, clean and considerate, but I can't stand the noise or the dust involved in breaking up concrete. My whole being feels dusty and gritty, and the whole house shakes. Yikes.

Firewood

It's been uncharacteristically hot, but no more bush fires in Nelson.

In the still, sunny, hot hours of Sunday, we had to haul all our firewood from our driveway pm the southwestern corner of our small property, up a flight of stairs, to the northeastern corner outside the kitchen. We had to make way for a skip that the builders will bring on Tuesday, as the demolition of our existing wood burner (fire place with a lit) and concrete chimney commences. The wood burner is still in a pretty good nick, but it doesn't comply with Nelson's clean air regulations. Once we got the ball rolling, we discovered we could have stuck with the old one for one more winter, but what the heck, we may truly not be able to afford the swap a year from now, so here goes.

The new one is a twee-looking standalone, something that would look good in a cottage with hand-knitted doilies, but we had no choice as we wanted to keep our wetback, and the new one will be easier to clean and replace parts. In the meantime, farewell to our more-or-less modern looking heater. Thank for the many cold evenings sitting in front of you staring at the flames and talking with friends and family. You've been far more entertaining than the telly.

Ben and I send our sincere sympathy and good wa to our friends on the East Coast of Australia.

Updraft

Birds (not a dust spot) try to catch an updraft (last evening).

First day back into the real world, I came out of work at the Red Gallery around 4.30PM, and look what I saw! Here's The Nelson Mail article; we can smell it from our home.

Mapua Again

A view from the Mapua wharf. The Smoke House restaurant (blue, far right in yesterday's post) was used in the recent Air New Zealand commercial.

Due to a death in the family, we're off to Japan. We hope to resume posting when we return.

Theme Day: Best Photo of The Year 2008

This was the best photo in a series of four posts about the oil rig that visited Nelson. The original post of this image was on 17 July. The rig first first appeared on 31 May; subsequently it was on 9 August and 27 September. Following the last post, it was just outside the bay still visible from Rocks Road because the weather condition was still bad; apparently these rigs require three or four days of calm water to move on safely. The rig has not returned so I guess it's finally really gone.

Happy New Year, everyone!
