Honda assembly plant was one of the major employers in Nelson until it shut down a decade ago. For the last few months/years, the building had been for sale. It must have sold because Monday night, when we went to get the biggest blue tarpaulin, we saw the shed being taken down.
End of an era for Nelson; Honda is having a reunion of former staff on the weekend.
As for our huge blue tarpaulin, it cost four times as much as I had expected, but there's something so attractive about a big piece of cloth covering things...
I'm originally from Birmingham UK and the same has happened to the car industry dessimated. Terrible waste.
ReplyDeleteYes, Babooshka, I think all around the developed world, I'd imagine. Really sad, because it takes a day or two to drive to most parts of New Zealand from here - delivery would be a cinch, not to mention employment.
