Blue Sky

A beachside apartment complex by the Tahunanui Beach. A sky is blue and grass is green...

The amaryllis... When Meg said it'll be a short series, she thought it'd go for a week, maybe two. In 16 short hours, one flower is 90% open, another 80%, another about 60%, but the tiny one in the middle is still green and tight. This was taken around 8PM last night. By the time we went to bed, the big three were even more open. (Who left the TV on? What is it, Survivor???)

Yellow Boy

...or girl. The only yellow duckling around.

(And a short series on Meg's amaryllis for the next wee while; this was shot around 4pm yesterday.)

Pretty Pegs

While we waited at the traffic lights, I was mesmerized by the pattern of the laundry pegs. Sometimes I'm so easily amused.

Long Week

I love my husband dearly, but he likes to take a week off at times when I'm the busiest! I have to install a small exhibition in exactly a week, to the hour, and I have only finished two pieces, I need three more, because it took me two weeks to recover from wisdom tooth extraction, rather than the alloted 2.5 days, but he has next week off!! I'm not complaining, but ... ^%$#@!!!

Sunset Last Night

I always thought clear skies or interesting cloud formation made great sunsets. Yesterday it was overcast fairly evenly, and there was just a horizontal slit, but the sunset was pretty dramatic nevertheless.

Cherry Blossom

I just realised, I haven't posted a cherry blossom yet. It's nearly a end of the season for this.

Orchids Season

I had 12 pots of orchids a year ago. Most are the big and small burgundy cymbidiums. (Cymbidia???) Last summer, one died, and this year, one decided not to do it's business, and I suspect one of them was/is the svelte green-white one. Darn...

Still, this baby was the first to bloom this year. We saw giant yellow orchids in an Asian restaurant in Brick Lane the first night we went to London back in 2003, and I've always wanted to grow yellow ones. Soon after, I found this at the local Saturday market. Not as dramatic, but probably much easier to grow.

In Nelson, I leave orchid pots outside all year round, so it's a little dusty, but sweet nevertheless.

Cropping

I wish I could crop out real life mess like we do with pics...

Spring

As horribly messy as our place is, spring flowers that are supposed to bloom have been blooming and it's definitely spring. Sunday was almost like summer!

This poor white-with-green-vein tulip didn't stand a chance, in a pot with three bigger brothers. It wilted before it bloomed.

Still rather elegant.

(Sorry I didn't see the lint while shooting.)

Sign

It looks like a lot's of white stuff in the sky. Well, it was a sunny day with patchy clouds, quite warm and nice for having a little walk.

ToXic

It's the brand name for the organic coffees from our proud local shop Pomeroy's Coffee. Pomeroy's store can be seen here.

Morrison Street Cafe

The cafe serves very nice coffee and food. It was taken with 24mm lens from other side of the road and cropped quite heavily.

"How Many More Do You Need, Meg?"

A couple of weeks ago on a sunny Friday afternoon, I took pics of my friend Kath Bee on the beach and in parks around Nelson. Kath is a children's singer-song-writer and her second CD is going to be released at the end of November.

I casually offered to take some very amateur promo shots, but as we worked I got more and more worried. I told her I needed about 200 to come up with half a dozen usable ones. She does have a professional graphic designer working on posters and such, so maybe he can do his magic, fingers crossed.

You can listen to a few songs on her Myspace, or check out her blog here or website here, or buy her music from this site.

One of my favorites...

Quilt Show

Carla from my gym is very involved with Nelson Quilters' Guild, and they had their biennial (I think) show this weekend at Nelson Girls College. There were so many people at the show I was envious; I'm not sure a weaving show can attract that kind of crowd in Nelson.

But, boy, talk about labor-intensive work. To me, the patchwork on the front is bad enough, but the quilting in those elegant curvy lines is just mind-boggling.

They provided white gloves so we are allowed to touch them and turn them over, and were also allowed to photograph. Here is one of Carla's, and one of my favorite in the show. I had seen this before when she finished it, spread out on the gym floor, but it was so much more impressive to see this hung so I can stand back and admire it. I'm not confident the colors are true on your monitor, but the values of the pieces were carefully studied and positioned, making this an understated but stunning piece.

Well done, Carla!

(I'm having top two wisdom teeth extracted at 9AM this morning. I think I'll look like a chipmunk by about 11AM, but at least I hope to maintain some kind of symmetry.)

Another House Gone

Or maybe two, to make way for a retail something, presumably. The all-too-sudden appearance of space along the street was startling.

On Rutherford St, almost across this car yard.

Red Cars Go Faster

There used to be a Ferrari Museum, right in the middle of the town, with something like 13 or 19 of the red, yellow and silver horses, including a couple a famous so-and-so drove in this-or-that F-something race. Ben-the-car-nut never visited it, saving it for a special occasion; I took baby brother on his first visit to Nelson in 1999, and though it was felt like a tiny space, we were in there for good two hours taking pre-digital pics. Now we have a classic car museum attached to WOW, (actually that part is heaps bigger than the wearable art part), but from memory, no Ferraris. I wonder if this man was the owner of the old museum.

Last Monday on Rutherford St.

(I admit, I find that Ferraris have to pull up to a neighborhood gas station to fill up like any other car a bit funny.)

October 2008 Theme Day: Lines

We happened upon a student Shakespearean performance a while back. Here are more details. There are plenty of good lines in Twelfth Night.
