Long Beautiful Autumn

It's been a long and beautiful autumn this year. Our liquid amber tree has from pale yellow and minty green to deep dark red leaves just now, but this year, not as many purple ones, my favorite. I know the colors differ from year to year, and I'd imagine it has to do with moisture and temperature and such, but the tree looks so "red" this year.

A year or so ago, I heard on a radio interview that a Canadian (?) scientist discovered leaves don't fall on their accord, that the tree let go of the leaves as it prepares for winter. Kind of like parents letting go of children, no?

More autumnal pics.

  1. What an amazing picture! But what a difference - here in Edinburgh it's spring and today I posted a picture of the flowering clematis!

  5. Beautiful colors Meg. I love the translucent quality to the leaf. Pretty veins and shadows.

  6. Thanks, Sue. It reminded me of these chemistry experiments many decades ago where we took leaves and somehow kept all the veins and got read of the... leafy bits. Do you know what I mean??

  7. Saw this in The Press this morning and thought how perfect it was for your photo Meg ... "low sun filters through twiggy branches, turning the few autumn leaves still left hanging into bright jewels"

  10. Nice, DWS, and I reckon this morning has been almost as cold as a Christchurch morn.

  12. A very good shot. Always fascinating to have you guys on the opposite side of the calendar. Here it's scorching hot and I have to wait until midnight to have some relative darkness for my blue hour shots.
