Hokey Pokey Ice Cream is a New Zealand treat; it's vanilla ice cream with golden Hokey Pokey nuggets; the New Zealand Ice Cream Industry says after vanilla, this is Kiwis' second favorite flavor, followed by chocolate and strawberry.To your right, Hokey Pokey ice cream in the ice cream container. To the right, my version: break the Crunchie chocolate bar in the wrapping, unwrap, mix content with ice cream, preferably when it's still soft immediately after coming home from the supermarket. You get crunchier Hokey Pokey this way. (But if you want a quick fix, you just pile it on, like in this photo.)

Oh we love hokey pokey ice cream here too in NI, though its usually known as 'pooh bear' here. A really quick, and surprisingly good version can be made by mixing a tall tub of double cream with a large tin of condensed milk and freezing (a spoonful of vodka or brandy will stop it freezing too hard) and then mixing in either homemade or shopbought honeycomb. Yum, this has put me in the mood for some...
ReplyDeleteYou can buy the honeycomb???? Can we, in NZ, anyone?? I've never seen them - yet. Cadbury used to make tiny hokey pokey bits individually wrapped in chocolate called something like Golden Bits, but they discontinued it around 1995; that was another good option for this. I like vodka or brandy addition; must try your version.

(Although after reading "French Women Don't Get Fat", I was VERY impressed with the intellectual approach of the French once again, and was glad I wasn't born French because I would be such a serious social misfit I probably would have had to immigrate to the other side of the world!)
Yes we do ...Its like eating standing up at the kitchen sink. Those calories don't count. Sitting down at the table will add the calories on.Take it from one who knows....Haha, I do loooveee ice cream. Don't have the Hokey Pokey flavor, guess I'll have to concoct it myself.
ReplyDeleteOoooooooooooooooooo..first I just have to say I've been known to inhale a "Violet Crumble" in a weak moment! My husband's soon-to-be-ex-sister-in-law is from OZ and she introduced me to them...HEAVEN...even if it gets all stuck in your teeth! LOL!

This is a cruel, cruel thing to do to me. I've wanted ice cream all day but the roads are too icy to get out to buy some.
ReplyDeletePhotowannabe, did you also know that if you share goodies with friends and laugh a lot while eating, you consume more energy than you take in? Also, if you eat out of the container without serving it on a plate or a bowel, that doesn't count as eating? I know all the tricks! (Though my diet doesn't work very well...)

Yep, you can buy honeycomb here, its been sold at the Old Lammas Fair forever - though it's usually known as 'yellowman' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowman_(confectionary) (We have a very sweet tooth in Ireland!)
