Hokey Pokey Ice Cream is a New Zealand treat; it's vanilla ice cream with golden Hokey Pokey nuggets; the New Zealand Ice Cream Industry says after vanilla, this is Kiwis' second favorite flavor, followed by chocolate and strawberry.
To your right, Hokey Pokey ice cream in the ice cream container. To the right, my version: break the Crunchie chocolate bar in the wrapping, unwrap, mix content with ice cream, preferably when it's still soft immediately after coming home from the supermarket. You get crunchier Hokey Pokey this way. (But if you want a quick fix, you just pile it on, like in this photo.)
(Culture of New Zealand in Wiki has a special section on Dairy Fat!!)
Oh we love hokey pokey ice cream here too in NI, though its usually known as 'pooh bear' here. A really quick, and surprisingly good version can be made by mixing a tall tub of double cream with a large tin of condensed milk and freezing (a spoonful of vodka or brandy will stop it freezing too hard) and then mixing in either homemade or shopbought honeycomb. Yum, this has put me in the mood for some...
ReplyDeleteYou can buy the honeycomb???? Can we, in NZ, anyone?? I've never seen them - yet. Cadbury used to make tiny hokey pokey bits individually wrapped in chocolate called something like Golden Bits, but they discontinued it around 1995; that was another good option for this. I like vodka or brandy addition; must try your version.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds really good, but far too unhealthy for me!
ReplyDeleteCurly's Photoshop
Looks yummy thanks to your lens but it does not seem really reasonable, as the Xmas lunches are still quite recent ...
ReplyDeleteCurley, if you took away unhealthy food from me, I'll be in danger of becoming a slim, fit, calm, well-read, all-rounded person, and we don't want that, do we?
ReplyDeleteMatthieu, haven't you learned that ice cream goes into a different place from "meals"?
If only I could be in Nelson at the moment (to answer your message from CO DP). I wish I could visit you one day ! Comming to the 2nd question, do you mean we have a special stomach dedicated to sweet moments like ice creams ?
ReplyDeleteMatthieu, yeah, let us know ahead of time so we can do fun things!!
ReplyDeleteAnd re. the anatomy lesson, of course, we do! Don't tell me it's just a short, chubby, female thing!!! (Although after reading "French Women Don't Get Fat", I was VERY impressed with the intellectual approach of the French once again, and was glad I wasn't born French because I would be such a serious social misfit I probably would have had to immigrate to the other side of the world!)
Yes we do ...Its like eating standing up at the kitchen sink. Those calories don't count. Sitting down at the table will add the calories on.Take it from one who knows....Haha, I do loooveee ice cream. Don't have the Hokey Pokey flavor, guess I'll have to concoct it myself.
ReplyDeleteOoooooooooooooooooo..first I just have to say I've been known to inhale a "Violet Crumble" in a weak moment! My husband's soon-to-be-ex-sister-in-law is from OZ and she introduced me to them...HEAVEN...even if it gets all stuck in your teeth! LOL!
ReplyDeleteAnd this is just sinful..I'm gaining weight as I LOOK at it....NOOOOOOOOOOO! I'm heading out...running an extra mile just for good measure! LOL!
Fun shot you two! ;) xo
Meg
ReplyDeleteTry the Nelson market. There's someone from Golden Bay (I think), right next to the lady who sells organic eggs, pretty much in the middle.
$6 a comb.
This is a cruel, cruel thing to do to me. I've wanted ice cream all day but the roads are too icy to get out to buy some.
ReplyDeletePhotowannabe, did you also know that if you share goodies with friends and laugh a lot while eating, you consume more energy than you take in? Also, if you eat out of the container without serving it on a plate or a bowel, that doesn't count as eating? I know all the tricks! (Though my diet doesn't work very well...)
ReplyDeletePiika, blizzard sounds wonderful. I must go to a DQ - I wonder if there is one in Australia because that, I think, would be the nearest - OR NOT??? JB?????
Ame, you must be exhausted from all the running. Can I get you anything?
JB, do you think Varroa Mite has any effect on them? (Do you really live, like, at #50, and spy on us? What am I eating just now?)
Faye, it's just tough love, my lady. Anticipation is half the fun. Think of the joy you will experience when you can finally drive to the store!!
Thank you for visiting, everybody.
Hey, you have a great answer for everyone.. hehe :)
ReplyDeleteI wanna say thank u so MUCH for putting my link in the forum, that was so nice! I don't know when I'm going to be activated... and I'm glad your problems with that are solved now... Thank u so much!!

Good morning from Madrid!!
No worries, mate. I'm glad I helped someone and thanks for saying "Thank you". I'm really feeling good now.
ReplyDeleteMouth watering. Would love to try it.
ReplyDeleteMental Floss, ring me and come over. I'll make you some. It must be hot in Mumbai.
ReplyDeleteIt looks delicious! I love Hokey Pokey ice cream.
ReplyDeleteOh Meg! YUMMY!!!!
ReplyDeleteI know you asked for more backstage shots but I won't be doing any plays till the second half of the year. HOWEVER, I do a lot of corporate events and stuff does happen behind the screen. if I can, I'll catch a couple of shots just for you.
Oh, great, Eddie. I like your architecture and water shots and your garden, too, but something about your people shots are magical, so I look forward to them. Remember the fella (watch seller?) that wanted to look dashing? Only you could have shot that.
ReplyDeleteLet's see....it's 8:40 in the morning here in Minneapolis- - -perfect time for Hokey Pokey Ice Cream!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me hungry....
ooo meg...
ReplyDeletei love ice cream, any kind of ice cream. NZ or not. haha...
to everyone who needs to think twice about eating ice cream, they are a great source of calcium, it prevents osteoporosis :-)
Yep, you can buy honeycomb here, its been sold at the Old Lammas Fair forever - though it's usually known as 'yellowman' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowman_(confectionary) (We have a very sweet tooth in Ireland!)
ReplyDeleteWell, Chris & Deb, you have been known to wake up and get into town in the early wee hours, so I wouldn't be surprised if you're ready for a bit or nourishment.
ReplyDeleteKeropok Man, exactly! And it's good for emotional health (until the guild settles in)!
Blueboat, now I'm kicking myself for not having made Ben cross the border from Inishowen in spite of the car rental agreement. We even went to see the border!!
Ice cream and chocolate candy. What's not to like???
ReplyDeleteLife is good, don't you think, oh Great One?
