Are You Nuts???

I have a hard time making Ben eat breakfast on weekdays, so lately I've been baking loaves seriously loaded with nuts; this one is whole peanuts and sliced almonds. I bake with all kinds of nuts and seeds, but whole peanuts are new this winter. We need no extra condiments - just toast and eat, and that's far more nutrition than I've been able to get into Husband before he shoots off to work. I know traditional Japanese breakfasts are supposed to be healthier, but I didn't grow up with it and I get a bit put off by the smell of warm miso soup and chargrilled fish in the morning...

What do you like for breakfast?

  1. I am with you Pete! Coffee first thing, then an egg omelette with cheese on the way to the office, or a can of sardines, tuna, or poached salmon. Forget the bread, cereal, fruit and western health damaging diet - protein over carbohydrates! Yeah! I love miso, breakfast, lunch or dinner! Thank you Japan, for giving me a healthy choice! I understand your need Ben. Then again, Meg, I would love to try your bread one day, always up for new things homemade. Lesley Expat Kiwi

  2. Ben loves miso, but I don't; way too much salt. I do like Kyoto's white miso but they are harder to get.

My toasts now weigh a lot, but anything to get Ben to eat SOMETHING with his coffee... I was slack this morning; we had teabag tea. Usually I grind the beans and have coffee-machine coffee, but didn't have time as I too had to get ready. The tea bag kept popping up, so for the purpose of this photographs, I stuck that spoon and shoved the teabag down.

    Yikes, now I'm officially embarrassed.

  3. OMG - you have me laughing off my chair - your description has me loving this photo even more! Meg, you are priceless in the most appreciative sense. And..... Bread should be solid and full of real things, not the powderpuff stuff that is so first choice by most these days. My partner is American, and believe it or not, I now have him on rolled oats for breakfast - no time to make your style wholesome bread! As for miso and salt, I am not worried, as it is pretty well the only salt I consume (he love miso too, a mid-west boy to boot). Thank you for a great photo and your efforts to maintain your man, (how I relate to that)! Lesley Expat Kiwi

  4. Well, a slice of bread would definetely too little for my breakfast... I usually have a bowl of milk & muesli and a cup of coffee with chocolate.

  5. A woman after my own heart. And chocolate in the morning! We might have been twins in our previous lives, Irina.

  6. Ben is soooo lucky! When I wake up in the morning, the baker has to make my bread and the cafe owner has to make my coffee. :-p

I do love cinnamon raisin and multi-grain breads because they are great simply toasted. So I can understand how this peanut/nut bread can be delicious.

  7. LOVE LOVE LOVE cinnamon with anything! Or alone. Sticks (which is called "quills" here which is nice) or pulverized. And in combination with nutmeg and/or clove. Great minds, yes?

  8. Hi Meg. I'm a huge fan of Vogels, precisely for it's nutty, seedy "full" flavour. With Marmite not Vegemite.

    Alternatively? Porridge :)

  9. For about a decade, we only ate Vogels, in addition to my home-made, but a few years ago their recipes changed drastically and we haven't touched the stuff since, Fi. I like Marmite in combination with Rose's Lime Marmalade, but Ben stays well away from M&V.
