This is a yesterday morning! This is how you can see in clear day. (sorry for scale difference)

Design Mentor Day

According to the book, these are called Supergraphs. Time consuming, but potentially useful. They look quite different close up vs. from a distance.

This morning we have fabulous Chinese Brush Painting-like fog which Ben tried to capture, but the last I heard of it was, "I can't see anything..."

Waimea Road

Near the hospital, this is about the top of the hill. In the distance, there is a pedestrian crossing and this signal is synchronise with one at the crossing.

Betts No More

When I visited on Wednesday the shop signs were in the process of being taken off. Betts, one of a handful of intelligent art supply shops in New Zealand, closed at noon today.

Thank you for all your help, Tony, Arlene, Clare, and co. Also, for your friendships, Bill and Ron.

More Stores Closing Down

Continuing on my lament for independently-owned shops... The Linen Press, an upmarket bed, bedroom furnitures and linens is closing. This shop often had interesting bed fabric that I liked to gaze at from outside the window. A few years ago, they also carried chef uniforms and I wanted to get Ben one of those checkered- or chili-pepper-designed pants, but he declined. Missed your big chance, Mate!

Another One Bites the Dust

Plastic Box, I was told, is a group of independently-owned shops trading under the same name. It wold things made of plastic, as you guessed. Today it closes its doors.

Are You Nuts???

I have a hard time making Ben eat breakfast on weekdays, so lately I've been baking loaves seriously loaded with nuts; this one is whole peanuts and sliced almonds. I bake with all kinds of nuts and seeds, but whole peanuts are new this winter. We need no extra condiments - just toast and eat, and that's far more nutrition than I've been able to get into Husband before he shoots off to work. I know traditional Japanese breakfasts are supposed to be healthier, but I didn't grow up with it and I get a bit put off by the smell of warm miso soup and chargrilled fish in the morning...

What do you like for breakfast?

Japanese Dessert

I had a special treat from Meg, last night. It's "O-Shiru-Ko" (御汁粉). Basically very sweet Azuki beans (小豆) soup with rice cake (お餅). This case it's a Shira-Tama (白玉), which is base from very fine special rice (もち米) powder.

I wonder if there is any place serving this in town.

Passing

Looked up, try to find something like a bird, I found a big one. It illuminated by sunshine and growing like green rocket (well, with wings).

Not a bad result from a 500mm mirror lens on 1/60 sec on shutter on hand held.

Marshmallow Sky

Just now. I just looked up after putting another log in the fire.

Inside the...

At the viewing deck at the Nelson Airport... Well, I must be board at the time or thinking something else than aeroplane or beautiful surrounding. This pattern and colour attracted me to take a snap. It's in the trash can.

We thought it's funny sign...
Here is the link to article (I'm not sure how long it will be up.)
According to this, the NZ 20% of certain age group of NZ men are still living with their parents compare to 13% of same age group of women.

Winter

It was quite cold when I took this in few days back. No, it's not at night but I exaggerated by mimicking moon light effect. BTW, yesterday was quite pleasant, blue sky with absolutely no spot of cloud - which is bit disappointed by me as a cloud lover. Unfortunately, I didn't take a single shot of picture, yesterday.

Hooked on Cropping

When we started NDP, I thought manipulating digital photographs would be cheating, but after learning a tiny bit about photo-editing, it's become part of my DP life.

Fast forward three years and our figure (life) drawing class is having to come up with one drawing each for a massive exhibition to be held in August. This term, helped by Betts' spectacular sale and having to consider mats and framing, we've all been experimenting. My thing has been to select a small area of a larger paper and applying gesso in the small area only, and drawing with different media. This is chalk pastel, but willow charcoal on gesso has been my favorite. While drawing I'm guided by the tapes indicating where I've gesso'ed, but I don't know exactly what's in the final drawing until I peel off the covering sheet and tapes. Kind of like a reverse-cropping? I love the surprise element, which is different from the way I work with my weaving.

How do you approach your photographs?

V8 SuperCars in Town

There are just an eye candy. No major race event in Nelson, BTW - as far as I know.

Ben's Pic in a Mag!!

Ben's pic was used in Cruise Passenger magazine, Issue 36, winter 2009, Australia issue, (p.28). He didn't get paid, but the photo was credited.

Take a bow, Ben!

PS. The featured image was taken at the Marlborough Sounds (Sandy Beach).

It's Not Working!!!

We've been trying to clean up and reorganize my yarn stash room for over a month now. But this winter has been uncharacteristically cold - we've had mid-winter temperatures since, oh, mid-April? Today start out at 15C and steadily declined to 12C. Our house, with the new fire, has seldom gotten above 15C! For painting, it's been too overcast to see properly, too.

So after a weekend of hard work, we (I) still need to sand the bumpy bits of the wall, which was badly prepared by a "professional" a decade ago. It's never-ending, this home-ownership thing.

I was always looking forward to take this shot. I just did today when the cloud is almost cleared. - and I find out I need to clean my camera's sensor.
