This is the "Knowledge Mural" by Chris Finlayson (1990). According to the City Council's trusty art map: "It's based on rock carvings, from Palaeolithic art in 25,000BC to Egyptian hieroglyphics (1350BC), Celtic verse (800AD), to Aboriginal and Maori art."
You can find this at the corridor of the Nelson Public Library.

Lots of knowledge in that place, which is more than can be said for most walls being decorated these days. Cheers from Stockholm!
ReplyDeletefirst mural of the day... Finlayson (not chris) is a familiar name here. It is known here for fabrics and bedsheets.
ReplyDeleteAmazing how this fresco looks like the walls of Lascaux or many other grottoes in Périgord (France). This orange horse is exactly the same than his prehistoric brother!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing, very good choice, fantastic piece of art, beautifully photographed!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
A Knowledge Mural at the library makes good sense.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!!! I admit I'm not sure yet what to post for tomorrow (yes... it is still February here in Lisbon)...
ReplyDeleteThis I take it then was commissioned and the artist no doubt paid handsomely.
ReplyDeleteVery cultured!
ReplyDeleteIn Sydney there's a Green Boy!
Nice theme for a mural and beautiful piece of art.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great photo of a beautiful piece of art. Wonderful choice for the theme, Ben.

Now this is an extraordinary one! Happy Theme Day!
ReplyDeleteGreat project the city sponsored.
ReplyDeleteThat's a fabulous choice - I'd not thought of a mural based on old cave paintings. Very clever and very nice. Lovely soft colours.
ReplyDeleteVery similar to the paleolithic paintings found in caves in the south of France, isn't it interesting? But were there horses in NZ then?
ReplyDeleteIt looks great.
ReplyDeleteI meant to thank you earlier for the photograph advice you are posting on the forum. it's great.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's a lovely mural, and a nice choice!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting choice. I like the idea of that mural in the libraty.
ReplyDeleteVery cooltured!
ReplyDeleteI love it. It's like walking down history.
ReplyDeleteI immediately noticed the resemblance to cave carvings. What a great idea...yes, a visual tour of history. Great post!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool. They forgot to mention Chegal! At least I see him in there with that broad mix of ages and ages of expression. Very apropos that it on a library building. Have a great Sunday Ben (and Meg),
