Across the street from the Bead Gallery is the Trade Aid shop. (You can see the shop sign in yesterday's pic.) Nelson shop being the most profitable Trade Aid in New Zealand, I was shocked when Ben came told me the shop was empty last week, so we had to investigate.
Margaret said they only renewed all the fittings. Phew! I can't take all my favorite shops disappearing from Nelson, you know. And it's Mom's Must Go place in Nelson, too.
It reopens today.

Sadly Missed
Nelson's, (and New Zealand's; folks used to come from Auckland,) awesomest Bead Gallery is no more. I used to hike to the lovely house on Parere Street where the shop started. After the awesome art supply shop Betts closed, Laurie moved the bead shop into town. Not long after, from memory, his young son and three mates died in a horrible car crash, and a few years later, Laurie himself was taken suddenly, so it was inevitable, but still sad to see the shop close last month.
Laurie didn't know who I was but knew I came in often enough. Once he told me his son's passing "really changed" him, but he couldn't say more. I hope they are happy together now, wherever they are. And thank you for all the awesome beads.
Mike Ward has a lovely picture of Laurie stuck on the wall of his jewelry studio, above Morri St Cafe, up a short way on Hardy St.
